We group our events into 3 basic categories.
Spiritual: Like mass or vespers, these events have a spiritual or religious focus. Our main recurring spiritual events are the third weekend each month.
Service: Events where the primary activity is helping a charity, such as a soup kitchen, a food bank, or a donation center. Our service events occur at different times each month, or sometimes as our First Friday event.
Social: Events where the primary activity is social, such as dinner at a restaurant, a board game or hobby night, or going to a sporting event. Our main recurring social events will often occur as First Friday events, but can also be at other times each month.
First Friday are typically on the evening of the first Friday of the month and they're primarily Social or Service events. The type of event changes every month. Past events have included game night at a restaurant, volunteering for a charity, and going to MSI (full disclosure, we moved the First Friday event to Saturday for MSI).
On the third weekend of the month, not always on Sundays, we do some kind of a mass or Spiritual activity connected with a meal. It might be a noon mass followed by lunch, or solemn vespers followed by dinner, or anything similar. The idea is to pray and socialize together as a community group.
We mostly choose parishes where we have members or contacts. If you're willing to play host for a day at your parish, please let us know and we'll get you on the calendar. No experience necessary, we can walk you through it. (And we're nice, we promise.)
One-off events happen on different days and times each month. These could be any kind of activity, and feel free to suggest (or volunteer to host!) anything fun that we're missing. Past events have included summer festivals, volunteering with charities, a day retreat to a Catholic shrine nearby, and a concert in Grant Park. We're open to just about anything we hear about that's happening in Chicagoland.
Events might have age restrictions. For example, some charities have a minimum age for volunteers. Please be sure to check the event details if you are planning to bring kids.
Event descriptions will include "kids welcome" or "older kids welcome" when we're intentionally open to people bringing their children with them. Please always feel free to reach out if you need more information to decide if an event would be appropriate/enjoyable for your kids.
C4 does not charge for events and we don't solicit cash donations.
We want our events to foster community and we want them to be as accessible/affordable as possible. The majority of our events will be free or at locations like restaurants where everyone can control their own costs.
A few events (e.g. sports games) will be at venues that charge admission or require tickets. You'll buy your own ticket from the venue. Details on where/how will be in the event description.
We love ideas. Please pass them along. Extra super bonus points if you're willing to help host or plan an event.
